Ring Main Unit (RMU)

A Ring Main Unit (RMU) is a factory-assembled medium-voltage (MV) switchgear system designed to distribute electrical power from substations to multiple load points while maintaining network reliability and safety. It is commonly installed in distribution substations for commercial buildings, industrial facilities, residential developments, and utility networks.

RMUs typically contain load break switches, circuit breakers, earth switches, and protection devices inside a sealed metal enclosure. The ring configuration allows electricity to flow from two directions, ensuring continuous power supply even if one section of the network experiences a fault.

Modern RMUs are available with SF₆ gas insulation, solid insulation, or vacuum technology and can be integrated with remote monitoring and SCADA systems for smart grid applications.
